Do You Have a Transition Process for the Aftermath of a Traumatic Event?

Your District has experienced, and will continue to experience, traumatic events of all types, from bus accidents to the natural deaths of students and staff. One of the measures of your administration's effectiveness will be the transition back to normal operations.

Most Districts hold a Faculty/Staff meeting prior to the re-opening of the school to brief everyone regarding the incident. This is an important event; however, it is a time when individuals are supporting each other and gathering information about the event. This means they will possibly miss or misinterpret critical information. It is very important to hand them a written plan that covers all aspects of the event and the transition.

You may find yourself needing two written plans, one for the highly-impacted site and another for District-wide distribution. This is a critical last activity for your Incident Management Team who will need to support the activities of your school counselors and others who will respond to assist.

Building a Response
A response begins with a high degree of management activity and then tapers off as you move towards resuming normal operations. You build a response by using one of the planning templates. Each template starts with 3 pages. You then customize each page to meet your needs for a particular incident.

Page 1 has General Information such as:

  • Details of the event
  • Key resources (names, numbers and locations)
  • Activating safe rooms
  • Planning a Parent/Community Meeting

Page 2, shown below, is a schedule for the first day after the event. It enables you to plan and coordinate detailed management activity.

Page 3 is a schedule for the rest of the week, concentrating on broad objectives and reducing management intervention. You can insert additional pages as necessary. So if you need detailed schedules for Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, etc., you can add them simply by pushing a button!
